No Outrage For White Democrat Who Called Black Woman A ‘Negro’ 8 downtrend Can you image the outrage if a white male Republican referred to a black woman as a negro. I think it’s safe to say that hypothetical Republican’s political career would be over no matter how much he apologized. Lucky for a New Jersey mayor he’s a democrat. A liberal using racially insensitive language is so acceptable that even the NAACP thinks it’s cool. LehighValleyLive reports that Washington Borough, NJ Mayor Scott McDonald recently sent out an e-mail statement responding to criticism that the city government lacked diversity. “We have a negro woman on our governing body,” wrote McDonald. Wow, right? It’s not the N-word, but it’s close. Negro hasn’t been an appropriate way to describe black people since the 1950’s. Not only didn’t McDonald apologize for his poor choice of words, he dug himself a deeper hole with his explanation. “She is a negro woman,” said McDonald. When asked why he didn’t refer to her simply as a black woman, he said: “This isn’t something that I gave any thought to. Negro is a word I believe is used commonly.” Really? Does he honestly think white people often call black women “negro women”? Here’s a little test he can try: he should go down to some predominately black slum and start calling people “negros” and see how many times he gets shot, stabbed, or punched. Jim Smith, the recipient of that e-mail, described it as “offensive, inappropriate and completely unacceptable that the mayor of anywhere would refer to someone as a negro.” But that’s where the outrage ends. City Councilmember Ethel Conry is the black woman who McDonald was talking about when he made the “negro woman” comment and she’s not too upset that her fellow democrat referred to her that way.
