Xircom's main effort over the years has been to design/make/sell LAN adapters for notebooks.

Since Intel wants to accelerate the use of notebook PCs (high ASP content of CPU) as well as getting them all connected via LANs to other PCs and the Internet, their business model seems to fit Intel's strategic objectives.

Intel made a similar investment in Standard Microsystems with a similar product line.
