It's rather easy to address the "him showing weakness" issue because that's based on documented comments he's made in the last few months.

He's almost seemed to "accept" Russia's annexation of Crimea. If you're Putin or his analysts you're going to think "this guy has already accepted our move into Crimea and he'll probably remove the U.S. sanctions and that will lead Europe to remove their sanctions".

That establishes a WEAK position regarding Russian aggression.

THEN, he says publicly, that he may NOT support the Baltic States if they don't come up with some cash. That changes NATO from an alliance that had only existed to protect Western Civilization and Democracy into a Business Deal. That could mean to the Russians that they only need to provide enough Cheap Oil and Gas to the U.S. and Europe and then nobody will care if they reconstitute the U.S.S.R.

Selling people and countries for money isn't something the U.S. is known for and I kinda like that.
