While I don't appreciate most of LBJ's agenda, he was a man who could make things happen. Listening to all those tapes really made me come to understand it. The tapes are one of the most fascinating and informative data points available on an president I've seen. He really knew how to press his relationships with Congress and others to the limit to get exactly what he wanted. In spite of the Vietnam mess, I developed some respect for him after hearing that stuff. As to Reagan, he and Tip worked each other. It was two people who knew how to get stuff done. The Tax Reform of 86 was was an amazing piece of legislation and they just made it happen.
