Jokichi Takamine first isolated epinephrine in 1901. [10] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system. [11] It is available as a generic medication. [1] The wholesale cost in the developing world is between US$0.10 and US$0.95 a vial. [12] In the United States an autoinjector for anaphylaxis, as of 2016, costs about US$600 for two. [13]

Actually, today's price is closer to $700, if not higher. Quite obviously, the transformation of one of the oldest and least costly medications into something fantastically expensive didn't happen due to free market forces.
