I pondered that some and came to the conclusion that injection by needle has been around a long time in all sorts of variations. If it was a space craft, sure, or maybe they outsourced the design to some backwater close enough shop. While I generally avoid conspiracy theories, the other explanations I came up with seemed implausible.

If someone had a print, or the spec that made this a difficult engineering problem to solve, I'd love to see it, although I won't spend time looking for it myself.

Also, your use of the words 'nutty' and 'routinely' are interesting.
