I have a solid understanding of what is fiction. I also understand how wingnut welfare works. Someone makes up a bunch of shit that reinforces wingnut beliefs, publishes it in a book on one of the presses dedicated to wingnut beliefs, and then profits handsomely from that. It can usually be leveraged into a series of speeches to wingnut audiences and even maybe some appearances on Fox or wingnut radio. If they can make a big enough name, they can even leverage it into a regular appearance on Fox or even a show. There are a lot of people who exploit this and have profited handsomely. Caribou Barbie leaps immediately to mind.

Now none of this has to have any basis in reality or facts. It is all about reinforcing a belief system. It can be a huge money generator for those with few ethics or little self-respect.
