When you sell 1000 to the market maker it counts as 1000, then I buy 1000 from the mm, it adds up to 2000 despite the fact that you and I basically exchanged the shares. On the NYSE this same exchange would count as 1000 in volume. It doesn't stop there, as market makers also do swaps between themselves of blocks, and those are reported as volume as well. The volume therefore is a minimum of double counted.
