Christine:

The type of surgery Del is talking about has probably considerably less risk than the drive to the hospital. Also the anesthesia will probably be local with some sedation and memory-erasing medication. All in all, as safe or safer than filling a tooth.

Post surgical depression can be real, but usually associated with much more major operations and long hospital stays, immobilization and dependence on others for basic bodily cares, etc.

Asking the questions you suggest is a good idea. Finding the right surgeon is a little trickier. The vast majority of the Board Certified surgeons will be fine. If you know someone in the field, an operating room nurse or anesthesiologist, for example, who will give you an "off the record" recommendation, this is very helpful. Family doctors are OK for surgical recommendations, but it's amazing how few of them have ever seen the surgeon they refer patients to actually do an operation. This is why the OR nurse's or Anesthesiologist's recommendations are so valuable, if you can get them. Someday I should write a book about this.
