Interesting results from energy tests on consumer items.

I just got a bill that is too high so...

I bought my 42" Vizio flat screen because the decreased foot print and energy savings over my large Sony CRT would pay for the TV over a couple of years. Then the on/off sensor from the remote failed. So I've been keeping it on and I use a USB stick to display a black JPG figuring that would use the least energy.

Watts:
40 when the black jpg is displayed
32 when I watch media from any source!!! totally against my expectations and WAY more use than I expected.

So I'll be keeping it off using the manual on off button to turn it on. Still turns off with the remote.

27" iMac i7 with an SSD drive
140 on standby
170 when in read and write
0-2 when in sleep mode

21" iMac i5 with a normal hard drive
54 standby
62 read write
0-2 sleep mode

External hard drive (dock)
12 standby
16 read write
5 offline (ejected but still running)

So the TV running 24hrs a day has been burning over 800 W a day
If I use my smaller iMac online I can cut my energy usage at that time by over half.

!

Ya never know until you test 'em.

I realized without testing that my use of my microwave to heat water really burns watts. I dring a lot of tea. So when its not hot I'll be using a tea kettle. Gas is cheap, and heating water in the winter this way is basically free.
