My family did not think I could walk away as they saw me a classic type A. I had a heart attack at 59 - recoverer completely - and said screw that life. I gave a years notice and the exit process worked well for all. I still remember the elation as I drove away after my last day. Your comment about what one's personal identity is is nuts on.
