I would agree completely with the author's opinion of DCR (Digital Cable Radio), as we in the midwest call it.

A few years ago, when I was in college, the cable company in Terre Haute began offering DCR for a few extra dollars per month. It was nice to be able to hear music that is not normally broadcast, but there was something not quite right about it. I think the author hit it on the head about the lack of a DJ. Another problem I had with DCR was the limited play list. It seemed each genre would recycle the same songs by the same artists. Kind of the feeling you get with commercial radio stations but there it is expected.

All in all, it is nice for one with eclectic tastes without a brave enough wallet to just go into a record store and buy music at random. In addition the problem of not being able to hear exactly what you want when you want it is present.

I thought of DCR alot when evaluating CDRD as a short. However, I kept coming back to the financial obstacles of getting the satellite actually aloft as the clincher. Lately I have been thinking of the technical obstacles as perhaps even more persuasive.

FWIW,
Allan
