Jim: I've spent the holiday period looking at sub $1000 PC's.

I started off basically believing that this was a fad, these people would wakeup and want a real PC (something costing upward of $2000). I have to say that I was wrong, this is a real PC and is actually useful and seems to be the hottest product in the stores.

What concerns me most is the "mind set" change that accompanies the concept of a sub $1000 PC. In the past you purchased the highest power PC you could find because the cheaper models would be obselete before you had them unpacked. It seems to me that this new trend represents a maturing of the PC market, Customers are no longer seeing the value that the high priced system offers, so for them price is king.

This raises a lot of questions about the ability of chip makers to continue with the exponential price increases for only doubling the CPU clock speed. If the PC market really matures in the next year or so than all the old pricing models will have to be rewritten.

I also noticed that notebook prices have started to tumble, I saw a few sub $1100 notebooks. Does anyone have an accurate BOM breakdown for a Notebook. It seems to me that this area is one in which the price can really get hammered in 98.
