As I was finishing my post about the comparative vigor of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, my wife told me that Trump was appearing on Dr. Oz’s television show to discuss his health. I stopped blogging and joined her in front of the television.
Trump’s appearance was a success. It should help him extend his advantage over Clinton in the medical/vigor department and improve his image.
The first segment of the show consisted of the doctor asking Trump questions about his health in the same way a physician does at a check up. Trump’s answers, delivered calmly and well, revealed no medical problems.
Next, Trump turned over to Dr. Oz the results of his just completed lab work, as summarized in a letter from his doctors. The results were excellent.
I’ve been blessed with excellent health so far and my lab results are almost always good. But with the exception of his weight (236 pounds on a 6-3 frame), Trump’s results were better than mine just about across-the-board. And he’s older than I am.
Dr. Oz was impressed. He told Trump that if he received these results for a patient of his, he would congratulate the patient and send him on his way.
Trump stayed on the popular show for the full hour. In the next segment, the tycoon’s braggadocio surfaced, but in the segment after that, Ivanka joined her father and lit up the show. Ivanka’s speech at the convention was one of its highlights. She’s even better in conversation.
Ivanka spent most of her time talking about Trump’s proposal to have the federal government help families with the cost of child care. It’s a liberal program, to be sure. It’s also great politics, especially when articulated as well as Ivanka did.
Trump took questions from Dr. Oz. Most were easy, but a few were pointed. After Trump said, as he sometimes does, that his administration won’t let people “die in the streets” due to medical problems, the doctor asked him whether this promise extends to illegal immigrants.
Trump relied that there won’t be any in the country under his plan. So are we back to mass deportation?
Oz also asked what Trump would replace Obamacare with. Trump didn’t say, but he assured us it would be great.
Trump took a few questions for the audience. They were softballs, but I’m sure his willingness to take them played well.
Trump agreed in advance not to talk about Hillary Clinton. He kept his word.
Oz said he has invited Clinton to appear. The campaign responded that she’s considering it.
Meanwhile, Trump has stolen a march on her, and at a very opportune moment given what happened to Clinton this weekend. |
