Fossil fuels ARE biofuels.
Both biofuels and "fossil" fuels are from biological organisms, but the usage of the word "biofuel" refer to fuel created from organisms that were recently alive and the conversion process takes a short time and is thus renewable in a reasonable amount of time.

"Fossil" fuels are from organisms that were alive very long ago and the process that turned it into something that could be used as a fuel takes an unreasonable long time so we consider it to be non-renewable. Of course there are sources on other planets most likely produced by non-biologocal mechanisms, but we are not at the stage that we can tap such resources.

In any case, Gaia takes too long for humans usage. :-)

While there is a lot, when it's gone, it's gone so alternatives will have to be phased in.

In addition, while people can argue all they want about CO2, when you burn stuff from the ground, it's undeniable that you release the contaminents into the atmosphere as well, such as mercury lead radioactive materials and so on. Biofuels - not as much.

Biofuel.
Semantics.

Just like the common usage of the word "organic" - practically* all food is organic, organic is made of molecules that must primarily contain carbon but also other elements, but is not "organic" in the other sense.

* - "Practically"? Well, I do eat bones, which has a high inorganic component… :-)
