We are fighting a Guerilla war. We know how to do that.


We are confused and lost after 15 years of continuous warfare. The attacks on our homeland are increasing not decreasing. A clear indication of a failed strategy.

1. We have only one unit in our armed forces that is fully trained and equipped for Guerrilla Warfare...
"USA Army Special Forces, aka SF, aka Green Berets"...
Free them to work independently - similar to the OSS

2. Accept that nearly every decentralized organization was launched from a pre-existing platform.

Anti-Starfish Strategy -

1. Change the ideology

2. Centralize them - use property rights, armed conflict, etc..

3. Decentralize yourself - the best opponent for a starfish org is another starfish.

Understand the Hybrid - A centralized company that decentralizes the customer experience
A different Hybrid - A centralized company that decentralizes internal parts of the business.

New Rules -

1. Dis-economies of scale - smaller may be better

2. Utilize the network effect

3. Utilize the power of chaos - creativity

4. Know the edge. Get to the real experts -

5. Understand everyone on the team wants to contribute.

6. Beware the Hydra - don't attack a Starfish by cutting off the head it just multiplies.
Yet, today that is still our primary strategy.

7. Catalysts rule - they inspire people to action - They connect people

8. The VALUES are the organization - ideology

9. Measure, monitor, and manage

10. Flatten or be flattened - embrace the chaos

Open systems can't rely solely on a police force. On the one hand there is freedom to do what you want, but on the other hand you have added responsibility. Everyone becomes a guardian of sorts.

When you give people freedom you get chaos, but you also get incredible creativity.
