Concerning downloading of Windows updates: I had the same problem. I wanted to download Windows updates for Windows 7 and every time I attempted to do this, the program started downloading Windows 10. Got up to over 80 updates waiting to be downloaded. When Windows 10 free download period was over, this "No downloading of and installation of updates" continued for a while, then suddenly the updates started downloading and installing a few at a time. After a couple of weeks, all security updates have been successfully downloaded and installed. I suspect that the Windows 10 push had something to do with the delay.
