Vestas Led All Wind Turbine Vendors For Orders Received In 1H’16, Navigant Reports

September 23rd, 2016 by Joshua S Hill

Danish wind energy manufacturer and developer Vestas led all wind turbine vendors in turbine orders received throughout the first six months of 2016, according to new analysis published by Navigant Research.

According to Navigant Research’s Wind Turbine Order Tracker 3Q16, published this week, Vestas received 3.5 GW of wind turbine orders during the first six months of 2016, leading all other vendors in terms of orders received. In total, during the first half of the year, global wind turbine orders spread over 11 vendors across 29 countries and totalled nearly 13.5 GW.

“Danish manufacturer Vestas showcased its market reach once again during the first half of 2016 by signing deals in at least 16 different countries across the globe,” said Adam Wilson, research associate with Navigant Research. “Competitors Siemens, Gamesa, General Electric, and Suzlon rounded out the top five vendors, with Suzlon more than tripling its capacity awarded in the first half of 2016 compared to the second half of 2015.”

However, despite the good news for Vestas, it might be a little too early to be lighting the candles on the celebratory wind turbine cake. Navigant Research made certain to note that the data behind its Tracker is from publicly announced turbine orders from the first half of the year, but does not include any data from China — the largest wind energy market in the world. The problem is down to the lack of reliable available data for China. Navigant further notes that “there are effectively two global wind markets: China and the rest of the world.” This is due to the fact that China is nearly exclusively serviced by Chinese wind turbine vendors, vendors who do not venture outside of China — thus creating a very separate market.

This must temper the results somewhat, as well as the regional allocation numbers. Navigant places Europe as the leading region, with over 6 GW of turbine capacity ordered in the first half of 2016 — thanks in part to the massive 1 GW Norwegian project awarded to Vestas. North America was listed as second with 2,953.3 MW of wind turbine orders for the first half of 2016, followed by the Asia Pacific region in third, with 2,275.3 MW — though as mentioned, this excludes China, which would likely outpace all other markets combined.
