I hitchhiked from Quebec City to Vancouver in the early 70s so I don't think most Canadians are "polite and law abiding". I found most Canadians to be very open, compassionate and understanding, very gentle. I did find my way to the rodeo in Calgary so I met a few Canadian cowboys, who weren't liberal. But they were far from their American counterparts.
I enjoyed Banf and Jasper's National Parks, especially Jasper's. I liked Montreal a lot. I spent a summer there with my wife watching my brother's place after he got married to a French Canadian girl in 1975. He went to McGill Medical school.
I really liked Quebec City. But no one spoke English and I didn't speak French. I lucked out, though. I went into one of the café's trying to order something ( no luck) and found a bunch of Israelis sitting at a table, speaking Hebrew. I stayed a week in Quebec City and had a lot of fun. I couldn't find anyone who spoke English, but I discovered a nice Israeli population that was bilingual (French and Hebrew).
What I discovered was that half of Americans of the liberal persuasion were very similar to most Canadians. Canada was a very liberal, humanistic USA without the A- Holes.
