Full story Williams to Unveil New Network Strategy at Jan. 5 News Conference
08:47 a.m. Jan 02, 1998 Eastern
WHEN: Jan. 5, 1998, 10 a.m. (EST)

WHERE: Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

WHO: Keith Bailey, chairman, president and CEO of Williams;
Howard Janzen, president and CEO of Williams Communications
WHAT: Today, Williams has a national fiber optic network devoted to multimedia products and services. The company also has projects underway that will nearly double the size of its network by the end of 1998. Included in the news conference will be announcements concerning the company's network strategy, the construction and expansion of the fiber network, and the company's strategic relationships, including deployment of a groundbreaking technology in its network. On Jan. 6, 1998, Williams non-compete agreement with WorldCom Inc. expires.
BACKGROUND:
Williams first applied the innovative concept of using decommissioned pipelines to house fiber optic cable in the mid-1980s, creating WilTel, which became the fourth largest fiber optic network in the United States. In 1995, Williams sold the majority of the fiber network to WorldCom's predecessor company. While Williams maintained ownership of one strand, the sale stipulated that Williams would not compete with WorldCom in specified business for three years.
Williams, through its subsidiaries, provides a full range of traditional and leading-edge energy and communications services. Its communications enterprises include nationwide single-source business communications systems integration; international video satellite and fiber-optic transmission; multipoint video- and audio-conferencing; satellite business applications; enhanced fax services; interactive technical training, on-demand distance learning, and Internet and telemarketing services.
