Hi David: I am not afraid to go short on stocks or options, i have done alright in the past but i would prefer to make my system more mechanical--triggering the buys and sells.

the problem that i face, is that when i back test the systems, none seem to be profitable in down markets (thomas demarks short sytem is about even).

the triggers for shorts and longs are different and inverting signals has not worked(<> 20/80,30/70 etc).

the systems that i have now easily outperform a neutral or bull market but they do lose money in a bear market. i have tried quite a few different ideas to catch stocks as they drop but none seem to be consistently profitable.

breaking below the 200d ma works sometimes but is not consistent.

ideas?
thanks
peter
