George: I have been very interested in C3 Corp. (CTHR). For those unfamiliar with the company, they are an offshoot of Cree Research. The company produces single crystal SiC gems. The stones have a hardness second only to diamond and light characteristics nearly identical. In repeated tests with professional gemnologists, 93% of those surveyed could not distinguish the SiC (moissanite) gems from the natural diamond. Only a proprietary instrument developed by the company can do this reliably. Conventional instruments can not tell the difference. C3 uses a patented technology to produce the gems which are very difficult to make in the size and quality needed for gemstones by other than the company's technology. The company will begin marketing unmounted stones to jewelry manufacturers this quarter.
What impact do you anticipate this may have on the natural diamond industry? What potential do you imagine such a product might have to create a market for these stones which will sell for about $500/carat for stones which look to professional jewelers like the best available natural diamonds?
