Excellent info. See also my reply to Tom's message.

What I gather from these approaches is that it seems that isdn is way overkill for internet access. Given that telcos are having overload problems with the changing usage patterns of phone switches (calls lasting 2 hours for websurfing rather than 10min call to mom), it seems that the statistical multiplexing (there must be a simpler term) should be done as *early* as possible. Given that, all you really want is a clear pipe to the pop, where a router/switch does this muxing. Given that, all the fancy control & addressing features of isdn are wasted. isdn seems ideally suited for end-to-end circuits, giving guaranteed bandwitdth and quality. But that's not what the ISPs of the future need.

What does this mean for Ascend's success in the years ahead? I really prefer usrx's approach: simple, dumb bandwitch to the CO. All they have to do is add Xdsl support.
