10/7/16 Contest update
It’s great that they warn people to evacuate before a hurricane hits. But how about an alert to investors before a storm blows away their stock, as was the case for ALNY this week. And, not surprisingly, the ALNY debacle cast a dark cloud on most of the biotech sector.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -17.29% YTD (vs. down -15.93% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -16.06% YTD (vs. down -14.50% YTD a week ago), while the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -8.60% YTD (vs. down -5.68% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 5.69% YTD (vs. up 6.08% YTD a week ago).
DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 42.18% YTD, jumped into first place getting a big boost from its 20% allocation to AUPH, the week’s top gainer. DNAJOE’s portfolio, up 30.80% YTD, fell to second place and GHMM’s portfolio, up 13.49% YTD, and also holding AUPH, moved up to third place.
At Friday’s close, 9 of the 58 Contest portfolios were still in the green, with 28 portfolios beating the NBI and 19 now beating the SPSIBI. The 223 Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -10.87% and a median YTD loss of -22.04%, with 59 of the 223 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Try to enjoy a relaxing presidential debate weekend biotechies! And to those who observe Yom Kippur, have a healthy fast!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
