My 2-bit prediction for Orcl in '98: Retrenchment. Orcl will struggle all year in its realignment to verticals. This plus product transition issues plus erosion of low-end and margin compression at high-end from Microsoft, plus increased competition from other apps vendors will make for a tough year. At the same time, a newly invigorated IFMX will successfully define a niche in high-performance object-relational and data warehouse products, marketing itself as best of breed and gaining share.

After the pain it will endure through '98 (perhaps into '99), Oracle will be back on track. Complex, high margin solution sales will drive renewed growth. A debugged Oracle 8 with object support and vastly improved data warehouse support will challenge Informix. Network computers will begin to be adopted, as IBM, Sun and Oracle ramp up. Successful enterprise pilot projects will demonstrate TCO benefits, and networked economy pioneers will line up to implement CORBA-based network apps that will demand object-capable data servers, which Microsoft will only begin to spec out.

I'm sitting this retrenchment out as far as my Oracle holdings go. Color me gone.
