'defining down Republican 'normal and reasonable'.

I agree that's a real problem and it affects both sides. For those who are looking at Hillary as a full-throated Liberal I suggest she is not that at all. She is a 'Rockefeller Republican'. Watch her pivot to the center and even a bit to the right if she wins. She'll do what she needs to do to try and win a second term in the White House, and that will most likely involve working with Paul Ryan and a GOP House. I hope against hope that it turns out to be a Democratic house, but we know this is unlikely. Even a Democrat majority in the senate is still very close to a toss-up. Unfortunately the vast majority of voters pay little or no attention to senate and house races. We had a televised debate between our senate candidates the other night and I have yet to find a single person, other than me, who watched it. And I was relatively unimpressed with both candidates, although I will certainly vote for the Democrat.
The Clintons are 'New Democrats' far from Liberals, although they wear the liberal camouflage well, because that's what they need to do to win. That said, I think Hillary is a capable, smart candidate and I will not even hold my nose when I vote for her... but a lot of millennials I know will hesitate in the voting booth and seek out 'none of the above.'
Lewis Black said it well...'a lot of people are sick of Hillary. Most politicians eventually go away. She never went away.'
So... defining Democrat 'Liberal and reasonable..' tricky in this day and age.
Here's a fun game: Name the last real Liberal Democrat to run for president. I'd be interested in your answers.
