One of the problems the conservative have is that they do not understand liberals. Liberals see conservatives clearly, but conservatives have no idea what a liberal is. In their minds eye, a liberal is a caricature of a liberal which has nothing to do with reality, but more likely a liberal as described by FOX. The reason they cannot see them is because they do not have enough information to understand them. In science it is called knowledge directed perception i.e. one cannot see what one does not understand. I think the way Trump sees the world is that he has found it is easier to just make stuff up then to actually look for the facts and logic. We see Trump doing that all the time. When presented with a problem he just makes up whatever solution he comes up with in his mind. And pays no attention at all with regard to whether it is true not. He has found that people are often gullible enough that it just doesn't matter and then he gets his way. In real estate one can see where lying comes in very handy. And Trump is a classic sociopath. His pathological lying is classic sociopathic behavior.
