Good points. The calculation at about 16% (others say 10%) was based only on the retail figure posted here to date. I don't suppose you have any data about the direct and business purchases. You seem to be saying...where there's smoke there's fire. ( although I suppose sometimes that's all one gets to go on in investing.)

Here's some more anecdotal evidence of the sub-1000 "symptom" for you.
Computer Retail Week Survey January 2, 1998
"Emergence of the sub-$1,000 computer was the most visible symptom of industrywide price drops in most hardware categories, from storage and modems to printers, monitors and scanners," writes Roger C. Lanctot, Computer Retail Week's Editorial Research Director.

The Business Week article (Dec 22/97) shows what look to me like good margins on chips down to the P200.

and intel has low end servers locked up, and will move up the food chain Darwinian style soon. So I suspect the overall story by year end will not be too bad, although it appears that a margins war is on with the most recent cuts.

I would not buy lower than about a P200 personally, and if it was only $200-300 more I would get a PII. Is it?

Regarding your prediction about sub $1000 notebooks this year: that would be nice, I would buy if its a p166.
