It was a trick question. Liberals have changed over the years, especially in attitudes about war.
Hubert Humphrey was a 'lunchbucket' liberal Democrat, but supported LBJ's war. Meanwhile LBJ himself
pushed through some huge liberal gains like Medicare and the Civil Rights Act and laid the groundwork
for Title Nine.
Mondale was a liberal, but not a very good campaigner. Michael Dukakis was a liberal, I think, but had a reputation as a 'technocrat.' Interestingly, Dukakis lost big, but won states like Iowa and West Virginia. How times have changed.
I'm guessing we will never know Hillary's true colors as a liberal unless she gets a Democratic congress.
But my fingers are crossed that she will make a huge difference with the Supreme Court, at least.
