Hi Ox.

No doubt you are onto a very seldom discussed tax free gain.

When Cohu was in the 50 back in 1999 and early 2000, I asked my broker if I could short the entire lot and never sell the stock to avoid the huge gain.

That would lock in my account equity as for ver penny it declined I would gain on the short.

The only negative on that scheme would be short profits were short term gains and long profits were taxed at a lower rate.

The tempting part of that plan was at a stock market bottom I would not have paid taxes and my account would have full equity value at the next bottom.

It still makes me think about it.

Those are seldom discussed plans that are tax loopholes and they can change with one letter from the IRS _ SCARY

To the degree that they exist Wall Street has a lobby that is very powerful and seldom talked about.

Just think how much income was tax free when options were never reported!!!
