One machine consists of 3 or 4 stations and therefore replaces 2 or 3 cashiers. $30/hour minimum times say 10 hours=$300/day times 300days(at least)=90,000 savings per machine or a payback of 2 years.
In addition if there is more abililty to handle traffic there may be an increase in revenue. An additional factor is a real lack of reliable trustworthy cashiers. The payback would be quicker for stores open more than 10 hours per day and 300 days per year. The proof of store acceptability is Kroger chain, clearly commited to incorporating these units in their stores.
