What time period?

Rome had no thinkers to compare with the ancient Greeks.

Marcus Aurelius was the closest and could not hold a candle to fellows like Plato and Aristotle.

No one produced anything to compare with the Republic by Plato, or On the Nature of things by Lucretius or so many other great Greeks.

Greece was a vassal state of Rome. The Romans saw them as a resource, and exploited them as such, but had no interest in cultivating them.
