They once asked Einstein if he could only study one subject what would it be? And he said history. I think he was right. Everyone should start by examining their history. It only goes back about 12,000 years for all practical purposes. When we settled down and grew grains.

One only has to know the basics of what happened in the last 12,000 years. That provides a context. When did we settle down? When did we figure out math. Before that all we could count was 1,2 and many.

When did we figure out an alphabet and written language. 3000 years ago. Ancient Greeks modifying the old Venieian alphabet-lol.

When did we figure out democracy and ethics?. 2500 years ago . Plato and Socrates-lol.

From 2500 years ago to the birth of Christ you have the ancient Greeks as the big thinkers in the world. For the next 1400 years after the birth of Christ societies devolved. And when the Germanic tribes conquered the last of Rome in 450 BC, Europe was without any large central government to protect the people. So the church ruled. On top of all of that the bubonic plague hit in 450 Ad.

People could not even leave their villages because of all the bandits and the world had become mostly illiterate, with only the monks keeping the written word alive.

And then Gutenberg in 1457 invented the movable printing press. A few decades after that hundreds of millions of books were printed, and they took us to the age of Enlightenment and modern civilization.

And the church was brutal during that time. Really fucking brutal-lol. Heresy meant torture.

There it is in a nutshell-lol.
