WASHINGTON — The FBI is reopening its investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server after discovering new emails, it announced Friday, a bombshell revelation with less than two weeks until election day. And Anthony Weiner may be to blame.

"In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation," FBI Director James Comey wrote in a letter to top congressional committees Friday, announcing that he agreed that the FBI should "take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation."

Law enforcement officials tell the New York Times that the information was discovered after the F.B.I. seized electronic devices belonging to Huma Abedin and her husband, Anthony Weiner.

The vague letter lacked any specifics about where those emails came from or what they contain, and it’s unclear how much the late-breaking news might reshape a race that was looking like a solid Clinton victory with just 11 days to go until the election.

But the news casts a cloud over Democrats' hopes for a big election night, casting doubt over what was looking like a near-lock for a Clinton win, and all but guaranteeing more continued heavy investigations of Clinton by congressional Republicans if she does hang on to become president.

Donald Trump and Republicans quickly pounced on the news.

"Hillary Clinton’s corruption is on a scale we have never seen before. We must not let her take her criminal scheme into the oval office," Trump said at a New Hampshire rally, praising the FBI and Department of Justice for having "the courage to right the horrible mistake that they made" as his crowd roared and chanted "Lock her up, lock her up."

"Perhaps, finally, justice will be done," Trump declared.

"Yet again, Hillary Clinton has nobody but herself to blame. She was entrusted with some of our nation’s most important secrets, and she betrayed that trust by carelessly mishandling highly classified information," House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement. "This decision, long overdue, is the result of her reckless use of a private email server, and her refusal to be forthcoming with federal investigators. I renew my call for the Director of National Intelligence to suspend all classified briefings for Secretary Clinton until this matter is fully resolved.”

Clinton's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, seemingly caught by surprise by the news. She ignored reporters’ shouted requests as she left her campaign plane for an Iowa event, and didn’t address the still-murky issue during her first campaign event in Cedar Rapids Friday afternoon.

But her supporters weren't exactly thrilled about the news, which threatens to knock her campaign off stride in a big way, threatening down-ballot gains and causing her post-election headaches at a bare minimum.

"Oh, jesus christ," said one close Clinton ally.

"It’s unbelievable. This election, man," the ally continued. "It messes with the campaign for sure. It messes with everybody’s mindset. For the past several days there’s been a great rhythm, there have been tremendous events, a lot of highs. This just knocks us down a few degrees,”

e vague letter, which lacked specifics, left politicians on both sides demanding more information, with Clinton allies vocally frustrated about the lack of detail in a letter that could badly damage her campaign while Republicans demanded the release of the new emails.

“We call on the FBI to immediately release all emails pertinent to their investigation,” Trump running mate Mike Pence tweeted.

“I don’t think any of us know specifically what any of this is about,” House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said on MSNBC.
