From my education (which may be completely incorrect), the semicolon denotes a pause between two sentences. The pause is slightly shorter than a period, and the two sentences should be contextually related. He went to the store; hungry for donuts was he. (acceptable) He went to the store; dogs bark loudly. (incorrect) Did my public education fail me? Also, when two (and not more than two) ideas are conjunctively expressed, the comma is optional. Is this wrong as well? -MrB
