There are lots of reasons to settle out of court. Naturally, one is you're guilty. Often, it is just to make it go away. Guilty or not. Maybe it's cheaper than the cost of litigation. Especially if it's"he said, she said" it's difficult to determine who is actually right and dragging it out just damages reputations. For a sitting president, this can be important.

For a grifting real estate developer, maybe not as much.
