Diamond rush??

BY - Since the investing world always needs to have a 'golden child' to throw money at, and there is some question whether gold will fill that role, diamond plays may indeed be where the money will flow to in the near term.

BUT... I think the diamond world is in for hard times (just re-read this and noticed the unintended pun... sorry) that I think will lead to a short run.

1. Diamonds are predominantly a luxury item.... downturns in world economy will have strong negative effect on demand, as already seen by the Debeers article

2. Just saw a clip on the national news about a new product slated for release in the spring. Moistenite (sp??) is said to be an almost perfect match to diamonds in strength and brilliance (no cubic zyrconian, this) and will cost 1/10th the cost of real diamonds.... So perfect that most jewellers would not be able to tell the difference. Looked pretty good on the tube ... but then so do the cz's on the shopping channel, too :-)

Just some thoughts.
