didn't IBM try to offer a superior operating system (beyond DOS) that didn't take ? Could they be interested in AAPL for its software skills too ? Maybe IBM is attracted to Rhapsody ?

There are good and bad things about IBM. The good thing is that they have no IBM OS that runs from the desktop to the mainframe and is accepted by the public. This means they would use Rhapsody They would promote and develop the Apple line of OS. It would also be in their greater interest to support and further develop the Apple hardware line.

The bad news is that, if you go back historically, there is a reason everyone hated IBM. If you bought IBM products you were stuck in the IBM world. They would engineer the hardware and doctor the software so that you were stuck with the IBM family. And the IBM family was very expensive. Don't forget it was IBM that wanted to kill the idea of the PC and was brought kicking and screaming into the modern computer world. That is how Microsoft came to power. It was the independent OS that would allow us to choose any hardware vendor developed by the "against the empire" kids. One of Apple's problems is that it was a little like IBM - make a proprietary system and charge a steep price. I am afraid that if IBM takes over Apple we will quickly be back in the situation of choosing between being a member of the big blue and the rest of the world.

What we want is a Apple OS that runs on any system. Go into Wal Mart, buy a copy of Apple OS and stick it on any computer and it runs. This way we have hardware competition and low prices.
