koan, I just wrote a post to somebody saying that sometimes you have to pick the BEST person for the job even if you don't like them. When we went into Europe, Patton wasn't very popular, but Eisenhower knew he was the BEST guy for the job and he sent him there to lead the charge. People didn't like Montgomery, but they KNEW he was the Best. MacArthur was an arrogant SOB but they KNEW they needed him in the Pacific. Von Braun probably should have been HUNG for war crimes because of all the slave labor he killed but instead he got a Free Pass to the U.S. because we knew he was the best missile guy alive and the Russians wanted him too. Sometimes it's wise and necessary to be CYNICAL if you want to achieve the best outcome overall.
