I'd say the millions of satisfied USR/3COM Palmpilot users out there (including myself) might disagree with that. The Graffiti handwriting recognition interface for Palmpilot is highly functional.

It may take 5 years for the technology to reach mass-market penetration. But the technology appears to be maturing rapidly, and the availability of serious CPU horsepower (Merced) in an affordable package indicates to me that 2-3 years is a more likely timeframe.
