Larry,
If I understand E-trade correctly their policy is to lend from their own long margin accounts and not lend to other brokers and not borrow from other brokers. They are keeping everything in their own system as a way to protect their customers from raids and call-ins. This limits the shorting stock available to the e-trade holdings that are long. Most of E-trades customers are web based investors who can dig into the AVNT story and either go short or stay away. Sense most investors never go short this limits the supply at E-trade. You can probably find stock to short at a broker who isn't online like Tucker Anthony or a thousand others. Stock may also be available through an online broker who is also a big broker otherwise like Schwab. Only problem is you may not like the $500 commission with the traditional brokers. Call a broker and ask if its available and negotiate the commission if you really want to short AVNT. Have you done your dilligence?
