These are figures from the office of U.S. Rep. Steven Horn from California. I only have hardcopy, but here is a press release from his office that does corroborate the facts:

house.gov

The projections were calculated by extrapolating the departments own progress disclosure and calculating how long the fix will take at that rate. For instance, if a department reported that in 3rd Q 1997 it completed 2% of the remediation, at that rate it will take 50 quarters (i. e. 12.5 years). Quadruple the effort and they will don't make it -- not even close.

Of course, you realize, that they are not even bothering with non mission-critical systems. Plus, recently I heard that the definition of "mission-critical" has been made more rigorous to drop the number of systems from the Y2K watch list.

If I can't find an on-line reference, I'll type the whole story in ver batum.

One prediction that I will make is that there will definately be a flat tax from the IRS (ironically done for THEIR benefit, not ours).

Another interesting idea that I heard from Peter Wong of Data Dimensions is that the there is a Year 2000 motive behind the telephone companies offering flat rates for long distance. Hmmm, I'll have to check this out.
