Larry,

I believe e-Schwab works like E-Trade and I have had difficulty in getting shares for shorting there. I switched to Datek and have never had a problem since, including AVNT. Perhaps equally important, they post to your account immediately and hence you always know where you are with respect to margins, etc. Commission is $9.99 per 1000 shares.
