Trump makes nice with the Clintons in ‘60 Minutes’ interview

Donald Trump is out of attack mode and making nice with his former enemies. [ Enemies? That should read 'old friends.' ]

In what will be his first post-election television interview, President-elect Trump tells “60 Minutes” that Hillary and Bill Clinton called him separately to offer congratulations, characterizing the former president as “gracious” in his call and his former opponent in her call “couldn’t have been nicer.”

The sudden about-face follows an extremely heated presidential campaign in which the GOP nominee dubbed his Democratic rival “Crooked Hillary” and threatened to jail the former secretary of state.

In a transcript of the interview, Trump strikes a humble tone as he discusses the target of some of his most caustic comments.

“So, Hillary called, and it was a lovely call, and it was a tough call for her, I mean, I can imagine,” he said. “She couldn’t have been nicer. She just said, ‘Congratulations, Donald, well done.’ And I said, ‘I want to thank you very much, you were a great competitor.’

“She is very strong and very smart,” he added.

Throughout the race, Trump vilified Clinton for her use of a private email server during her time at the State Department. His supporters often chanted “lock her up” whenever he mentioned Clinton at one of his rallies.

In the interview, set to air Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. on CBS, a toned down Trump also shifts his position on Obamacare, saying he will not throw out all parts of the Affordable Care Act as he promised before the election.

Trump’s repeated attacks on the health care law were a central focus of his campaign. He promised he would “repeal and replace” the law at nearly every major campaign event he held over the last 17 months.

Trump’s wife, Melania, and his four adult children were also sat with reporter Leslie Stahl for their first interview as the next first family.

Trump’s softening extended to former president Bill Clinton as well.

“Well, he’s a very talented guy, I mean, this is a very talented family,” Trump said when asked if he would consider calling Clinton for advice. “Certainly, I would certainly think about that.”

Trump said Bill Clinton called him separately to congratulate him on his victory.

“And he couldn’t have been more gracious,” Trump said. “He said it was an amazing run. One of the most amazing he's ever seen. He was very, very, really, very nice.”
