Thanks Terry, that's really what it seems like to me, but sometimes my idea of fair play doesn't coincide with society's. And I also worry that there are unavoidable situations that really aren't attributable to a doctor's mistakes and that we have gone way too far in extracting penance for these things-with a vengeance. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone would accept moral responsibility without it having to be a legal battle? For instance, if the dentist had said, this does occasionally happen, but I'll cover your medical costs and I'm sorry, I doubt my friend would go after the other things( even though she WILL have to miss work, and she WILL suffer). Now she is placed in an adversarial position and I think this is very hard emotionally for nice people.
