We are living in the Age of Entertainment. More than anything, people want to be entertained. The media, being profit-driven, quickly discover the most profitable kinds of entertainment to provide. Trump was (and is) a great boon to the media executives, and media shareholders. There is no profit in behaving in a socially responsible way.
