Sen. Boxer brings in bill to scrap Electoral College

(NEWSER) – In news unlikely to bring much cheer to the Clinton household, Hillary Clinton is now the winningest loser in the history of American presidential elections. According to the Cook Political Reportelection tracker, Clinton's lead in the popular vote has grown to more than 1 million, with 62,403,469 votes to 61,242, 652 for Donald Trump and 6,868,257 for other candidates, Time reports. Al Gore, the only other candidate since the 19th century to win the popular vote but lose to a rival with more Electoral College votes, had around 544,000 more votes than George W. Bush in the 2000 election.
Retiring Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer introduced a longshot bill Tuesday to scrap the Electoral College system, the Los Angeles Times reports. The college "is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately," she said. "Every American should be guaranteed that their vote counts." Trump, who has criticized the system in the past, now seems to be warming to it. "The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play," he tweeted Tuesday. In another tweet, he said that he would have "won even bigger" under a popular vote system by spending more time campaigning in states like California and New York.
