You aren't allowed to deduct your mortgage.

You are allowed to deduct the interest on it, though.

That's what's known as "Welfare for the Rich".

Renters don't get to deduct any part of their rent, yet the landlord who owns the building gets to deduct the interest he pays.

The interest is part of the rent structure, so even though the renter is paying the interest, the property owner gets to deduct it.

It's good to be rich, there are all kinds of ways to make poorer people subsidize your higher standard of living.
