It took a lot of resistance to Hillary Clinton inside the Democratic Party to allow the Independent Bernie Sanders to run in the Democratic Primary. Hillary still received more votes than George W Bush or her husband, but fewer votes that Barack Obama. Trump won by receiving a lot of votes from people who don't typically vote. The same reason Barack Obama won.
