Patrick, re: accents, diacritical marks, stuff
The Mac provides an easy alternative to memorizing ASCII codes.
Our good pals at Apple implemented a system based on your option keys. A particular Option-‘X’ will produce a specific accent type, which you then follow with the letter to be accented. For example, Opt-U will produce an ümlaut; you then type the appropriate letter.
Opt-U, A = ä Opt-U, E = ë, Opt-U, O = ö …
Opt-N produces a tilde: Opt-N, A = ã Opt-N, N = ñ
Here's a chart which shows additional examples.

The easiest method, however, is to use your KeyCaps application in the Apple Menu. Notice how the keyboard display changes when you press the Option key or the Command key. You can use this to insert the appropriate character in to your text. Most, not all, of the key combinations are cross-platform.
